Itinerary

Early in the morning, you will begin your overland journey from Kathmandu toward the Nepal–Tibet border through scenic Himalayan roads, passing rivers, waterfalls, forests, and mountain villages along the way. After completing immigration and border formalities, you will enter Tibet and continue the short drive to Kerung (Gyirong), where you will stay overnight for acclimatization.

After breakfast, you will leave Kerung and continue your journey across the vast Tibetan plateau toward Saga at an altitude of approximately 4,600m. The drive offers stunning views of snow-capped mountains, wide grasslands, rivers, and high-altitude lakes along the way. You may also spot local wildlife such as yaks and Tibetan antelopes while traveling through the dramatic landscapes of Tibet before reaching Saga for an overnight stay.

This is an important acclimatization and rest day in Saga at an altitude of around 4,600m. After two days of long travel across the Nepal–Tibet route, this pause allows the body to properly adjust to the high-altitude environment before continuing toward Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash. The day is spent at the hotel in Saga with a relaxed schedule and minimal physical activity. Short walks around the town are possible to observe the surrounding Tibetan plateau landscapes and local lifestyle. The air here is thin and dry, so rest, hydration, and slow movement are important for proper acclimatization. This break is not focused on sightseeing but on preparation for higher elevations in the coming days, including areas above 4,500m and the crossing of Dolma La Pass at 5,630m. Overnight stay will be in Saga.

After breakfast, you will leave Saga and continue your journey toward the sacred Lake Manasarovar at an altitude of around 4,590m. The drive takes you through the vast Tibetan plateau, where the landscape opens into endless grasslands, distant snow-covered peaks, and wide horizons that create a truly surreal travel experience. As you approach the Ngari region, the scenery becomes more dramatic and spiritual, with occasional sightings of yaks and nomadic settlements along the route. By afternoon or evening, you will arrive at Lake Manasarovar, one of the holiest lakes in the world. Here, you will have time to explore the lakeside, take in the peaceful environment, and experience the spiritual atmosphere that surrounds the area. The lake is considered sacred in multiple religions, and many travelers spend time here in prayer, meditation, or quiet reflection. Overnight stay will be at a nearby guesthouse close to the lake.

After breakfast, you will spend some time at Lake Manasarovar before continuing your short drive toward Darchen, the base town for Mount Kailash, located at an altitude of around 4,670m. Depending on weather conditions, you may get your first clear or distant views of Mount Kailash during the journey, which is often considered one of the most memorable moments of the entire trip. The drive passes through a high-altitude desert landscape with vast open plains and a deep sense of remoteness. Upon reaching Darchen, you will check into your accommodation and begin preparations for the Kailash Kora trek, including organizing gear and final arrangements. Darchen serves as the main starting point for all pilgrims and trekkers heading toward Mount Kailash.

Today marks the beginning of the sacred Mount Kailash Kora. After a short drive from Darchen to the trek starting point, you will begin your walk toward Dirapuk at an altitude of around 5,100m. The trail gradually ascends through rocky terrain and open valleys, offering increasingly close and powerful views of Mount Kailash’s north face. Throughout the trek, you will experience the raw beauty of the high Himalayas, with glaciers, prayer flags, and spiritual landmarks along the route. The atmosphere is deeply peaceful, with pilgrims from different backgrounds walking together in devotion. By afternoon, you will reach Dirapuk Monastery area, where you will stay overnight in a basic guesthouse at the base of Mount Kailash.

This is the most challenging and spiritually significant day of the entire journey. Early in the morning, you will begin your ascent from Dirapuk toward Dolma La Pass, the highest point of the trek at 5,630m. The climb is steep and demanding due to thin air and high altitude, but the surrounding views of glaciers, rocky cliffs, and the vast Himalayan landscape make it an unforgettable experience. After reaching the pass, marked by prayer flags fluttering in the wind, you will begin a long descent toward Gauri Kund, a sacred glacial lake. From here, the trail continues through rugged valleys and high-altitude terrain before gradually leveling out toward Zutulpuk. This section is physically demanding but spiritually rewarding, as many pilgrims consider crossing Dolma La Pass a deeply meaningful achievement. Overnight stay will be at Zutulpuk Monastery area.

After breakfast, you will complete the final section of the Kailash Kora with a short and gentle walk from Zutulpuk back to Darchen, marking the official completion of the sacred circuit around Mount Kailash. This moment is often emotional for many travelers as they conclude one of the most important spiritual journeys in the Himalayas. From Darchen, you will board your vehicle and begin the long drive back across the Tibetan plateau toward Saga at an altitude of around 4,600m. The journey offers familiar yet beautiful views of wide grasslands, distant mountains, and open skies, giving you time to reflect on the experience. Overnight stay will be in Saga.

After breakfast, you will begin your return journey from Saga toward the Nepal border, retracing your route through the Tibetan plateau and Himalayan landscapes. After completing immigration and border formalities, you will continue the drive back to Kathmandu at an altitude of around 1,400m. As you descend from the high mountains, the scenery gradually changes from dry Tibetan plains to lush green hills, rivers, and forested valleys in Nepal. By evening or night, you will arrive in Kathmandu, marking the successful completion of your Kailash Mansarovar journey.
